SWITCHING FROM J.P. MORGAN

Switching From J.P. Morgan? Here's What Actually Changes.

Most people first meet J.P. Morgan through a Chase branch as "Private Client," a tier built as much around banking relationship perks as investment advice. The dedicated-advisor tier above it looks more like a traditional wirehouse relationship, and tax return preparation isn't part of the offering at any level.

HOW J.P. MORGAN IS ACTUALLY STRUCTURED

Programs, Fees, and Minimums.

J.P. Morgan Private Client

Typically available with a combined ~$150,000 in linked Chase banking and investment balances. Blends banking perks (fee waivers, rate benefits) with brokerage-based investment guidance delivered through a Chase-based banker or advisor, rather than a dedicated financial planner.

J.P. Morgan Advisors

Dedicated financial advisor model, minimums vary by advisor and market. Asset-based advisory fees generally run in the 0.50%-1.45% range depending on tier and program, structured similarly to other full-service brokerage advisory platforms.

J.P. Morgan Private Bank

Reserved for ultra-high-net-worth relationships, commonly cited at $10 million+ in investable assets. Includes dedicated private bankers, investment specialists, and access to in-house alternative investment offerings.

Tax return preparation

Not included at any tier. J.P. Morgan advisors can coordinate with a client's outside CPA but do not prepare or file tax returns themselves.

HOW THE INCENTIVES WORK

What's Publicly Documented About Gathering Assets.

None of this is a secret. It comes from J.P. Morgan's own disclosures and industry trade press. It's worth understanding because it explains how the relationship is structured, not because any individual advisor is doing something wrong.

  • J.P. Morgan's retail wealth arm operates as both a registered investment adviser and a broker-dealer, meaning advisors can hold licenses allowing commission-based compensation on certain products, such as annuities or insurance, in addition to advisory fees, a dual-registration structure disclosed in J.P. Morgan Securities' Form ADV and Form CRS.
  • The Private Client tier is built around, and marketed as, a cross-sell of Chase banking relationships, checking, credit cards, and mortgages, alongside investment guidance, rather than as a standalone fiduciary planning engagement.
  • J.P. Morgan does not publicly disclose a households-per-advisor ratio for its advisor-based tiers. Advisor movement and book reassignment following departures is a pattern reported across the wirehouse and bank-advisor industry generally, not specific to any one client's experience.

Households per advisor: Not publicly disclosed by J.P. Morgan.

WORTH ASKING DIRECTLY

Three Questions for Your Current Advisor.

01

Is my relationship manager a fiduciary on all of my investment accounts, or only on specific advisory-designated ones?

02

Do you or your firm receive any commission or banking-product incentive tied to a recommendation you make to me?

03

If I need my tax return prepared, is that part of this relationship, or a separate engagement I need to find elsewhere?

WHAT'S DIFFERENT AT SINGH PWM

A Fixed Fee. No Asset-Gathering Incentive. One Person.

Singh PWM charges a flat annual fee that doesn't change based on how much of your money you bring over, doesn't pay Raman Singh more for recruiting your account from another firm, and includes tax return preparation under the same Enrolled Agent who builds your retirement plan. The practice also caps its total client base at roughly 60 households, on purpose, well below the loads described above.
